ACHS Seniors Volunteer for Day of Service

43

On Thursday, April 17, many ACHS seniors took part in the first-ever Day of Service. This event provided students with the opportunity to go out into the community during the school day to locations such as Habitat for Humanity in Kenosha, Fill-A-Heart in Lake Forest, Antioch Traveling Closet, Bernie’s Book Bank, Oakland Elementary School, Hillcrest Elementary School, and Petty Elementary School. In addition, many seniors served their community by making hundreds of cards for veterans, children, and senior citizens as well as blankets for Penny’s Purpose. This was an incredible day for the Sequoit Community, as everywhere our students went, we heard the same thing: “Thank you so much for doing this. Your students are so respectful and amazing!”

The ACHS Democracy School Committee, made up of ACHS staff and students, conceived of this idea in the Fall of 2023 and spent the better part of two years planning for it. Math teacher and committee member, Allison Herrmann, led these efforts and invested countless hours of time and organization to make this event successful. In addition, this event could not have happened without the support of ACHS administration, teachers, and support staff. From chaperoning student groups to securing buses to providing substitute teacher coverage, it was a Sequoit village effort. We look forward to making this an annual tradition and helping our students experience the joy of giving back to their community.
