In early April, freshmen at both Antioch and Lakes spent the morning visiting local houses of worship as a part of their Social Studies curriculum. All freshmen students are required to take either Global Studies or Advanced Placement Human Geography, and both courses teach the major world religions as a part of understanding the culture and history of people groups around the world. Additionally, the Illinois State Social Studies standards include Religious Studies as a required element of high school Social Studies instruction in the state.
In an effort to increase student awareness and understanding of the richness of cultures and people in our own community, three years ago we began taking students to visit two different houses of worship to supplement their study of world religions. This year, students visited Antioch United Methodist Church, St Raphael’s Catholic Church in Lake Villa, Lakeland Church in Gurnee, the Hindu Mandir in Grayslake, the Sikh Religious Society in Palatine, the Islamic Foundation North’s Mosque in Libertyville, and/or Congregation Or Shalom in Vernon Hills. While at the local houses of worship, students had a chance to interact with faith leaders, ask questions about their religious traditions and beliefs, and see examples of cultural and religious architecture.
This event has become a part of the freshman experience at both ACHS and LCHS and is a much-anticipated activity each year. Students report a greater appreciation for different cultures and religions after visiting these places and appreciate the opportunity to experience something that they otherwise may not have. Each year, the local faith leaders are very complimentary of the D117 students and are impressed by their questions and respectful behavior. We are so grateful to the D117 administration and our community faith partners for working with us to foster greater understanding and respect for all people in our community.
