Learning Together: Student Partnerships Thrive at W.C. Petty Elementary

19

At W.C. Petty Elementary School leadership and learning go hand in hand, and that spirit is on full display through a growing partnership between fifth and first grade students that’s making a meaningful impact.

Since February, a group of fifth grade student leaders has been volunteering their time each Friday during WIN (What I Need) time to support younger students in Dr. Walshire’s first grade classroom. Whether working one-on-one or in small groups, these fifth graders assist with specific learning skills, offering both academic support and positive peer connections.

The program has quickly become a highlight of the week for the first graders, who eagerly await the chance to work with their older peers. For the fifth grade volunteers, the experience has provided a powerful opportunity to develop empathy, patience, and leadership.

What makes this partnership so special is the shared sense of community it fosters. The older students serve as role models, encouraging, kind, and invested in the success of their younger schoolmates, while the first graders benefit from the extra attention and motivation that comes with peer support.

This initiative is just one example of the remarkable community of learners at W.C. Petty, where students are empowered to grow not only as individuals but also as contributors to the success of others. It’s a partnership built on trust, respect, and the belief that we’re all better when we learn together.
