Lake Villa District 41 Students Practice Their Portrait of a Graduate Skills and Traits

82

Our Portrait of a Graduate embodies our vision for the essential skills and character traits that students need to thrive in college, career, and life. It serves as a guiding framework, ensuring that every student develops not only strong academic knowledge but also critical thinking and a commitment to lifelong learning. This winter, District 41 schools focused on the Portrait of a Graduate trait of compassion and the skill of collaboration.

Compassion
Reading is one of the most important skills a child can develop, yet some students don’t have books at home. To help, Thompson School students collected books for Bernie’s Book Bank, an organization that provides books to children in need. With the support of teachers and families, students donated gently used books to share the joy of reading. When the books were finally delivered, they knew they had made a difference — spreading the love of reading beyond their own school, one story at a time.

Hooper School students, parents, and staff dedicated their evenings to volunteering at Feed My Starving Children. The kindergarten through 2nd grade families packed an impressive 8,856 meals, while our 3rd through 5th grade families contributed 15,768 meals. It was not only an enjoyable experience for everyone, but also an inspiring opportunity to embrace an important message of giving back.

Collaboration
Martin School student tour guides worked together to ensure new students felt welcomed and comfortable as they explored their new school. By collaborating, the guides divided responsibilities, supported one another, and made building tours more engaging. Their efforts helped new students feel at ease! Through teamwork, our tour guides created a positive experience, making every new student feel right at home!

Palombi School focused on student collaboration within the classroom. The students worked together in small groups and with partners to solve problems, share ideas, and support one another. By working together, students not only enhance their academic skills but also build essential life skills—communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
