Three talented students from Antioch Upper Grade School have been recognized with the Outstanding Soloist Award at the prestigious Evanston Jazz Festival. Cole Sanfilippo on alto sax, Abriana Hirtle, who performed both tenor and baritone sax, and Alex Dusek on trumpet, showcased their exceptional musical talents at this renowned event. Held annually at Evanston Township High School, the festival is an all-day jazz immersion experience that attracts nearly 50 middle and high school jazz groups from around the region.

The festival, now in its 20th year, is designed to inspire students through interactions with professional musicians and through a series of clinics, lectures, and master classes. The Antioch Upper Grade School Jazz Band had the opportunity to perform three songs and participated in a workshop led by notable educators George Andrikokus and Dr. David Fodor. This event also aligned with the festival’s mission to enhance the educational journey of students by delving deep into the rich traditions and innovations of jazz.

Our students also had the privilege of attending performances by high school and professional jazz bands, including a special noontime concert featuring the Alyssa Allgood Quintet and an evening show with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra accompanied by guitarist Bobby Broom. These experiences have undoubtedly enriched their understanding and appreciation of jazz, encouraging them to elevate their musical prowess. The community of Antioch is proud of Cole, Abriana, and Alex for their outstanding achievements and for representing our school at such a distinguished gathering. They truly are inspiring!
