PBL (Problem/project based learning) has been an integral part of the Grass Lake School foundation. It began four years ago with the embedding of these strategies and practices. After four years of professional development and practice, the staff has continued to grow into a PBL driven school. Each year, two Showcases have taken place, with the purpose being not only the sharing of the classroom products, but the applied learning of the PBL process. This year has been a connection to the community. The year began with our first day back to school with a bus trip around the “island” that Grass Lake School serves as well as a tour and introduction to downtown Antioch businesses and amenities that are in the Village. Finally, the staff went on the water, with a tour to “see” the island and learn more about the history and environmental features that are unique to the Chain of Lakes. This served as the stepping for thinking and connecting their products to community: defined as the classroom, the building, the surrounding communities and beyond.
