Sequoits’ Winter Athletic Powers Forward

33
Cheer Team

Athletics: ACHS

Our Sequoits continue to carry on a tradition of excellence and resilience. As the calendar flipped from 2023 to 2024 the majority of our competitive winter teams are in mid-season.

Dance
At the end of January, our Sequoit Dance team set an amazing bar for the rest of our student-athletes to reach or exceed. These amazing young women led by Coach Sarah Owen and Coach Maggie Quirke mustered a top 5 sectional performance at Jacobs High School qualifying for state. On the heels of that performance, they dazzled the judges and earned a final rank of 13 in the IHSA Medium Division.

Cheerleading
Not a group that is often out-performed, our Cheerleaders personified their warrior spirit earning a Sectional Championship, also at Dundee-Crown. Coached by Amber and Tim Babin and led by two newly minted IHSCCO All-State athletes, Caile Painter and Zamora Rodriguez Caballero, the Sequoits continue to climb the challenging ladder toward perfection as they attacked the mat at the State Finals on Friday February 2nd earning a Day 2 opportunity. We’re very proud of the Cheer squad who finished 4th in the IHSA Medium Division.

Girls Wrestling’s Londyn Lloyd

Wrestling
History was made on the wrestling mat this season! Freshman Londyn Lloyd became the very first female wrestler to qualify for the Illinois High School Association Sectional tournament. She had a tremendous showing at the Lake County Tournament, winning the county championship in her weight class. Joining Londyn as county champs are Edgar Albino Jr. and Gavin Hanrahan who took care of business on the boys side of the tournament. Antioch Community High School hosted the IHSA Boys Wrestling Class 2A Regional Tournament on Saturday February 3rd. Gavin Hanrahan (120), Edgar Albino Jr. (132), Ben Vasquez (165), and Owen Shea (215) all earned Regional Championships. Joining them as Sectional Qualifiers are Jacob Smith (106) Chase Nobiling (138) Colin Arquilla (190). Grayslake Central is the site of the IHSA 2A Sectionals on Friday February 9th and Saturday February 10th.

Boys Basketball
Boys Basketball has enjoyed an infusion of wins and excitement into the program. Our hoopers are vying for a top three NLCC placement (7-3) and look to build momentum heading into the IHSA Regionals on February 19th. Jr. Teddi Wetu recently broke the single-season steals record for ACHS with 53 with plenty of basketball left.

Girls Basketball
Sophomore Heidi Rathmann has been a scoring pacesetter for the Sequoits Girls Basketball team. They are currently in a heated conference race. Standout performers include Enza Nawrocki and Hailey Caya. The IHSA Girls Regional games begin February 12th.

Boys Bowling
Antioch Lanes became a little more crowded this winter with the addition of the District 117 Seagles Coop Boys Bowling. In their inaugural season, the Seagles led by Coach Kyle Baker competed against several opponents with long and storied programs. The learning experience will prove to be an excellent foundation for the future success of the program. Brayden Thornton stood out as the team’s best bowler and qualified for sectionals, another historic first for the athletic department.

Girls Bowling
Girls Bowling at Antioch has been well established. This season the Sequoits enjoyed several terrific tournament finishes. Senior Ugne Aleksaite consistently earns top 5 finishes with her outstanding effort on the lanes. The girls hosted the IHSA Bowling Regional at Antioch Lanes on Saturday February 3rd. Ugne and teammate Lucy Eifer are advancing to Sectionals at Arlington Lanes on February 10th!
