Emmons Celebrates 100 Days of School in Style

166

On February 1st, first grade teachers and students dressed in white wigs, pearl necklaces, and carried canes as they hobbled around the school. A sign that it must be the 100th day of school! Emmons School traditionally celebrates the fact that students are 100 days smarter with activities, decorations, and festive dress. The first grade theme of the day was “100 Years Old”. The students came dressed as their elderly selves. Kindergarten students had a 100 Day Fashion Show. Students came with 100 items glued to their clothing. In 5th grade, students dressed and participated in an 80s celebration in reference to the days left in the school year.

A wide variety of activities occurred such as creating computer generated age progression photos of each student and building a cookie structure made up of 100 cookies. The one hundred day celebration activities were incorporated in academic areas such as counting to 100 using Fruit Loops grouped by tens. The 5th graders engaged in an 80s themed math escape room. Students also wrote about what they think they will do and eat when they are 100 years old. Even in art class, students mixed 100 different color variations.

The 100th day is a wonderful, made-up holiday that allows the students and teachers to acknowledge their hard work thus far in the school year. Throughout the celebration, students are reminded of how much they have learned since the beginning of the school year. Thus, it provides motivation for the rest of the school year and the upcoming IAR state testing days. Emmons students’ hard work shines through as Emmons earns an exemplary or commendable rating from the state each year.
